The New Age Metro Sexual Men

The convention which holds that all men should be more rugged and masculine is being challenged in the modern era. Men are investing more money in their appearance and are becoming more fashion-conscious.

It is not uncommon these days for a man to have a dedicated skin routine, a high-end fragrance and a grooming routine at a beauty salon.

Enter the metrosexual man. Essentially a portmanteau of the words “metropolitan” and “heterosexual”, the term was coined in 1994 to describe a man who is meticulous about his appearance and does not hesitate to spend a considerable amount of time and money to maintain his grooming habits.

The metrosexual man is a stickler for personal hygiene and it is not an uncommon thing for him to be selective about the bath and shower products he uses. Most prefer aromatic shower gels and their bathrooms are usually lined with a range of products. The new-age man is very knowledgeable about fashion and can hold his own in a conversation about haute couture with women.

Skincare is of the utmost importance and having a daily routine is a big part of the equation for the metro man. His choices are based on products which moisturize, scrub and protect his skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Unlike his more rugged peers, shaving is an integral part of his day and only the best tools are used for the job.
This includes top-of-the-line shaving cream and a carefully selected fragrance.

Metrosexual men accessorize as well as, if not better than the fairer sex. Their look is completed by the ubiquitous man bag which has become the must-have fashion accessory. There is no bottling up of emotions here and this makes them good listeners, which goes down well with the opposite sex.

In previous times, haircare for men was a quick jaunt to the local barbershop with no added frills. A quick lop off the top and sides was all you needed, but this has been replaced by the introduction of hair and beauty salons complete with mani- and pedicurists to keep nails trim and a stylist to tease the locks into the latest hair craze.

Forget big-bellied men swilling beer and brandy around the braai, the metrosexual man prefers wine and is somewhat of a connoisseur who knows which to pair with a particular meal. The next time you are at the mall and you just happen to bump into a metro man, know that the person put in countless hours and spent some serious cash to achieve that picture-perfect look.
